What Would It Take?

I am an atheist
I don't believe in god
That anybody COULD
Is something I find quite odd
The evidence just ain't there
There isn't any proof
If there really IS a god
Then the fucker stands aloof

But I'm not inflexible
I can be made to believe
Just remove faith as a factor
And my belief you'll achieve
Not saying I'd FOLLOW
God could still be an ass
But at least I'd no longer doubt
Even if I'm not attending mass

So now it's YOUR turn
You god-bothering believers
How can we wake you
From your delusional fevers?
Can it be done?
Can your belief be negated?
Or are you dogmatic?
Can it not be debated?
Can you be shown
That your god is a fake?
How do we do it?
What would it take?
How do we show you?
Can you concede
That your faith and reality
Just don't agree?
Or are you the type
Who'll beleive no matter what?
SOmeone to whom facts
Are just pulled out of one's butt?

I ask because it seems
That no matter what atheists say
Our words have no effect
And we cannot manage to sway
You believers from your faith
Even with the facts on our side
Which leaves us little more
Than to ridicule and deride
Your position, your beliefs
Which are little more than dreams
At least from this position
That's how it seems
Cuz you've gone and placed yourselves
Up in ivory towers
Where facts and reality
Have no persuasive powers
You WANT to believe in god
Regardless of the facts
Which leads you to perform
Intellectually dishonest acts
Like continuing belief
And being dogmatic
And refusing to think
Instead running on automatic

Doubt is a Virtue

Virtues are behaviors
That help ourselves and others
They keep us from doing harm
To our sisters and to our brothers.
Politness, charity, and compassion
All virtuous indeed;
Bravery, devotion, courtesy
And helping those in need.
Yes, virtues make our lives much better
Both individually and as a collective
I'm sure that you'll agree
If you take a moment to be reflective

By contrast, vices are an indulgence
They're selfish and help only you
Vices aren't necessarily harmful
But then again, they might be, too.
"I wanna do this, I wanna do that!"
That's the vice-doer's cry;
Indulging their wants and desires
Whether or not they hurt others thereby.
There is nothing wrong with indulgence
If you take care to be virtuous too
But if your vices cause others distress
I may have to have words with you.

So let me ask you this:
When it comes to faith and doubt
Which one makes you a virtuous hero
And which one makes you a lout?

With doubt you're checking to see
Whether your conclusions are correct
Examining facts, making sure
Doing your best to protect
People from the unknown
Or their own unwarranted assumptions
Because reality doesn't reshape
To fit our hopes and presumption.
If there was ever a virtue of thought
Doubt has to be it
It keeps our view of the world honest
Instead of bullshit.

Now let's look at faith
And see if it's virtuous too
Whether it's selfless and beneficial
Or a vice that we should eschew.
Faith is belief without proof
Without any evidence
It's based in our imagination
And not reality; hence,
Faith could send us astray
Lead us to believe things that're wrong
It's hopes and wishes elevated to fact
Whether or not they were true all along.
If you don't see how that's an indulgence
I'm not sure that I can help out
But the fact remains that faith is the vice
While the virtue is definitely doubt.

Doubt gives us real answers
It shows the world as it truly is
Faith only shows us our wishes
It's not in the fact-telling biz.
Even if faith gets the answer
It's lazy, and right only by chance,
Whereas doubt gets it right using facts
Which lets us confidently advance.
It's clear which method works better,
And which of the two really does stink;
Faith is running on automatic,
While doubt forces us to think.
