বোধোদয়? আত্মসমালোচনা?

এ কী শুনি আরবীয়র মুখে! সৌদি আরবের শুরা কাউন্সিলের প্রাক্তন সদস্য Ibrahim Al-Buleihi , যিনি নিজেকে "প্রথমে মুসলমান, পরে সংস্কারমুক্ত" বলে পরিচয় দিয়ে থাকেন, গত ২৬ ফেব্রুয়ারি আল-আরবিয়া (দুবাই-সৌদি আরব) টিভিতে যা বলেছেন, শুনে এখনও বিশ্বাস করতে পারছি না।

It is the West that produced all this prosperity... (Prosperity) in everything. In the value, liberties, and dignity of human beings, as well as in the development of science, of technology, and of life. Do you believe that life today is the same as it was ten centuries ago? This tremendous change was produced by the West. Who else produced it?

In my view, over the centuries, the Arabs believed – and continue to believe – that they have sufficient knowledge and wisdom, and that they do not need to learn anything from others, because they appeared, on the stage of history, in order to conquer, not to learn, to teach, not to study...

This delusion of the Arabs persists to this day, even though the entire world has changed. The world has changed, but they still believe that it is their duty to teach others, and it is the duty of others to heed them. The truth is that the Arabs have nothing to offer others, yet they continue... This horrible delusion, this belief in one's own perfection, the belief that others must learn from them, makes it impossible for them to benefit from modern culture.

...এ যেন একটা ঝাঁকের আত্মা (spirit of a herd), দলের আত্মা (টিম স্পিরিট) নয়। একমাত্র একটা বুদ্ধিহীন ঝাঁকই বিরাজমান রীতিনীতির দাসত্ব থেকে নিজেকে মুক্ত করতে পারে না। তার সমাজ যেটাকেই ভালো বলে আখ্যা দিচ্ছে, ব্যক্তিও সেটাকেই মেনে নিচ্ছে। সে স্বাধীন চিন্তায় অপরাগ ফলে অন্যান্য সংস্কৃতি হতে ভালোটা গ্রহন করে নিজেকে সমৃদ্ধ করতে ব্যর্থ। সেই ছোট্টো বেলা থেকেই তাকে যে ছাঁচে ফেলা হয়েছে সেখান থেকে সে বের হতে অক্ষম...

...পশ্চিমই আমাদের চারপাশের এসব সমৃদ্ধির উৎপানকারী... সব ধরণের সমৃদ্ধির। মূল্যবোধ, স্বাধীনতা, মানবীয় আত্মসম্মান এমনকি বিজ্ঞানের অগ্রযাত্রা, প্রযুক্তি এবং জীবন মান সবই। আপনি কি বিশ্বাস করেন যে দশ শতাব্দী আগেও জীবনের মান এখন কার মতই ছিলো? এই যে ব্যাপক পরিবর্তন সেটা পশ্চিমেরই কীর্তি। তারা ছাড়া আর কে?...

... আমার মতে শতাব্দীর পর শতাব্দী আরবরা বিশ্বাস করেছে-এবং বিশ্বাস করেই চলেছে- যে তাদের মধ্যে যথেষ্ট জ্ঞান এবং প্রজ্ঞা রয়েছে, এবং অন্য কারো কাছ থেকে তাদের শেখার আর কিছুই নেই। কারণ ইতিহাসে দেখলে বোঝা যায় শুধু দখলদারিত্বের উদ্দেশ্যে তারা যতটা চারিদিয়ে ছড়িয়েছে, জ্ঞান আহরণ, অধ্যয়ন বা জ্ঞানের বিস্তারের জন্য ততটা নয়...

... আরবদের এই মতিভ্রম এখনো কাটেনি, যদিও সারা পৃথিবীই এখন সম্পুর্ণ পরিবর্তিত। পৃথিবী পালটে গেছে ঠিকই, কিন্তু তারা এখনো মনে করে অপরকে শিক্ষা দেওয়া তাদের কর্তব্য এবং অন্যরা শুধু তাদের মান্য করে চলতেই বাধ্য। বরং সত্য তো এই, যে অন্যকে দেওয়ার মত আরবদের কাছে আর কিছুই নেই, তারপরও তারা এই বাগাড়ম্বড় চালিয়েই যাচ্ছে... এই যে ভয়ঙ্কর বিভ্রম, এই যে আত্মউতকর্ষের ভ্রান্ত ধারণা, এই যে বিশ্বাস, যে অন্যরা শুধু তাদের কাছ থেকে শিখবে, এসব কারণে আধুনিক সভ্যতার ফসল পাওয়া তাদের জন্য অসম্ভব হয়ে পড়েছে...

তিনিই ২০০৬ সালের ২৩ মে তারিখে সৌদি আরবের Cannel 1-এ যা বলেছিলেন, তা-ও রীতিমতো বিস্ময় জাগায়। তাঁর বক্তব্যের সারাংশ:

(Terrorism is) the product of our culture. They are the product of a culture that believes the other does not deserve to live, and is an absolute enemy with whom no understanding is possible.

অনুবাদ:

সন্ত্রাসবাদ আমাদের সংস্কৃতির সৃষ্টি। এগুলোতো সেই সমাজের সৃষ্টি যেখানে মনে করা হয় ভিন্নদের বেঁচে থাকার কোনো অধিকারই নেই, তারা এমন পরম শত্রু যে তাদের সাথে কোনো ধরণের সমঝোতায় পৌছানো অসম্ভব।
